In 1980, the United States Hockey Team Wins the Gold Medal Game at 2:45.

eemmeennddeell says:

Again, Dillon is correct. There were different rules back then, completely
a round-robin tournament. There was no “medal” round back then, like there
is now, with four teams playing in the semis for the 3 medals.

Dillon Vipers says:

There was no gold medal game !!!!

RCPlanes59 says:

“The impossible dream comes true!” should be the line we revere so much.

Gillian Campbell says:

34 years after this game and they still haven’t won the gold again.

Tom Heimo says:

Renewal seems to be an impossible dream to USA.

Robert Sutton says:

My Best friends; Robert Gallo, Tony Busa and I (Robert Sutton) were at The
Russian Game (semi final) and obtained Tickets for the Gold Medal Game that
Sunday Morning – YES ! We were there, as Millions claim … I still have
All The Tickets and inside photo’s to prove it. It was absolutely a beyond
real moment, and still causes tears for each of us. We celebrated our Lake
Placid Olympic Trip by walking down the Main Street Sunday late afternoon
as Snow began to fall – Perfect. We Still Believe in Miracles !

Stephie Steph says:

@Numba1SouthParkFan- First of all the US played against Finland, not
Canada. Second of all, the way you insult Canadians make YOU a dickhead!
What have they ever done to YOU so you could insult them like that?!
Geez…

Stephie Steph says:

That was one their only olympic glories in ice hockey. They have since
never been able to equal this performance.

Judith Smith says:

A shot of inspiration for the day! YES! I CAN! I can do it!

cstuart97 says:

You know this was against Finland right?

Hoschi0913 says:

that were the days where we truly did reach for the stars, unlike today in
which most of us waiting for handouts

ThePapayaKing says:

U18? That’s your argument? What about U20, WCs, Olympics, and the NHL? You
ducked explaining what the difference is in the training models, because
you clearly have no idea. And, the point isn’t that the US sucks, it’s that
the US UNDERPERFORMS COMPARED TO ITS NUMBER OF PLAYERS!!! I’ll say it one
more time: Sweden has ***ONE-TENTH*** the number of hockey players. Do you
understand the significance of that? The US should have twice as many NHL
players as it does. Sweden should have one fifth.

Jiltedin2007 says:

Was Jari Kurri playing on this Finnish Team?

TheOldcrow1945 says:

Where’s the progress? Are you really that stupid? Just take a look at the
amount of Americans now in the NHL compared to 1980….The progress has
been remarkable.for the U.S. and hockey.. Hell, half of the New york
Rangers this year were Americans..The steps the U.S. has taken in hockey
has been nothing short of amazing.

TheOldcrow1945 says:

You are clueless…Russia, A power in hockey? What decade are you still
living in? The last medal they won was a bronze 10 years
ago…..Clueless…Completely Clueless. The U.S. is quickly catching and
will pass the Canadians in hockey in no more than 2 more
decades….Possibly in one more decade. The U.S. beat them in 2010 and then
barely lost in the final

TeamUSASportsFan says:

What’s ironic is this: in 1980, we had a team that was built out of nothing
but college kids against the juggernauts, and we still won the gold. In
2010, we WERE the juggernaut of the tournament, but we still lost to Canada
and had to settle for silver. Darn those upset losses. At least we also
have upset wins. -Team USA fan-

vitoduval says:

When this game was on USSR was in Afghanistan, in 2010 Canada and USA are
there.

Tom Heimo says:

If I remember correct, I wasn’t very sad about the fact that US school boys
won the gold medals instead of the Russian ‘amateurs’.. ‘Big ass country’?
That’s a great definition of USA today..

Cam Conner says:

Simply the greatest upset of all time, and the greatest game of all time.

Danny Alcazar says:

Broten!

Chuck Collins says:

gives me chills…this team is the most inspiring team ever!!!

Jeff Johnson says:

This transforms me back to 12 years old in an instant.

Timetodiddl says:

00:05 lol

Jeff Flinn says:

This game gave birth to the now-famous “U-S-A! U-S-A!” chant that you hear
from fans OUTSIDE the arena (standing in the snow) at 3:12 — Al Michaels
refers to it as “that roaring chant we’ve heard for a week-and-a-half, USA,
USA” ….

ThePapayaKing says:

Yes, Russia is still a power in hockey. Only one bad game cost them the
gold in the WJC this year, and only Canada has more medal than they have in
the last 10 years. The decline in Russians in the NHL has to do with a
number of factors, including the novelty being over and the financial
stabilization and rise in salaries in the KHL. Not every top Russian player
wants to play in the NHL anymore, but the talent is still being produced.
Olympic medals are one tiny fraction of the picture.

juliexoxo0510 says:

i love how herb was still giving them directions on what play to make next
with just 7 secongs left

Rick Ferko says:

I have the DVD Do You Believe In Miracles, the best documentary ever ! This
was probably the greatest moment in sports (USA beating Russia, the Finland
for the gold. Coach told them that ‘if they don’t win this game against
Finland, they will have to carry that to their grave’. They didn’t
disappoint !

TheOldcrow1945 says:

There are 5 times as many Americans in the NHL than there are Swedes….So
the fact that there is one tenth the amount of Swedes playing makes your
stat unremarkable…..The U.S. didn’t care about hockey until 1980….Since
1980 the amount of American NHL’ers has grown from 75 to 235….And those
eltie Swedish players that do not come over? Who are they? Joakim
Lindstrom? lol!!!!!! As far as your training model you refer to I know
exactly what you are speaking of…Practice/game ratio.

mikecutlet says:

ill never forget this!!!!!!!it was a great time in america

matt61387 says:

You talk like we got upset by Canada, a team with 11 NHL captains on it as
well as the winningest goaltender of all time. The US was in no way a
juggernaut going into the 2010 games, they were ranked 6th and expectations
were that they would be lucky to medal. But ya know, don’t let the truth
get in the way of what you think is a juicy story, because what bearing
does reality have on anything.

Joe Smith says:

Old time hockey!

Kyle Barker says:

i’ve played on this rink almost 4 to 5 times and will be this year as a
bantam. It is the same scoreboard from 1980 still used there. haha

matt61387 says:

Don’t you go lumping all American hockey fans in with that moron, most of
us(aka those of us from New England, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and
the Dakotas) know what the fuck we’re talking about. And nobody gives a
shit about the world championships, in fact I couldn’t tell you who won or
medaled in any of them, they lose all legitimacy by being at the same time
as the Cup playoffs.

TheOldcrow1945 says:

Yes Sweden has out preformed the U.S…..The U.S. has won 4 straight U18
golds and the Swedes have lost three straight to the U.S. in those
finals….This year once again the Swedes lose to the U.S. in the
U20’s…The more you use your keyboard the more ignorant you become.

Numba1SouthParkFan says:

Haha, I always like seeing us beat Canada in sports. Canadians are such
dicks to American.

padaxax says:

We say, why don’t you go to gym and loose some weight, you’ll might get
pretty ass too….

PagsandRags says:

I remember watching this with my family as a little kid (7 years old) and
crying because I was so happy. What an amazing team and an amazing series
of events that led up to winning the Gold medal.

Dominic Flores says:

@DigitalOberon after beating the soviets i can understand why lol

iStaLLionZ says:

Stop arguing you say when your comment is bound to spark more argument? How
about you shut the fuck up and just enjoy the damn video. Discussion over.

ThePapayaKing says:

There are more Americans playing hockey than any country on earth other
than Canada, yet Americans represent only 20% of the NHL. They should be
around 40%. Americans make up few of the leading scorers. Even the
percentage of Canadians is rapidly declining. The European training model
is vastly superior to what’s done in North America. Canada survives on
sheer numbers alone. Statistically, there’s NO reason Sweden and Finland
should be as successful as they are, but they know how to train.
