great to see the great Judy Sowinski there also, who is equally as great as
Weston; other great female skaters are Candy Mitchell, BJ Peterson, and the
greatest of all- the great Judy Arnold.

DRIVEIN101 says:

Joanie Weston was the “female Bruno Sammartino of Roller Derby”. She is
dearly missed.

MrPete60441 says:

Yes I definitively agree the great Antoinette Kadramas… She added so much
to the game… I am a big fan of Joanie, but always loved when the
Renegades came to Chicago….I often wished Kadramas skated for roller
derby instead of roller games..

Princess Grace says:

Joan Weston the “Great Blonde Amazon” wasn’t anything to play with back in
the day.! We loved her and watching these clips still do! Tku.

Girlsportfights says:

joanie weston was one of the only skaters in derby to die a millionaire –
with a complete track in her back yard

kevin beard says:

growing up in teh bay area you went to either a wrestling match or roller
derby luckily I went to both as a child of teh ’60’s, I was and still am a
bay bomber fan, I was sick to my stomach when I heard that joan weston had
passed away, there is a great roller derby team in heaven

andyr1313 says:

The great Antoinette Kadrmas!

MrPete60441 says:

Well Chet Coppick was certainly an acquired taste .. He late reported
sports here in Chicago at a local station… But I always liked the way he
interviewed Joan Weston, so I give him credit for that. AND you are right
again International Amphitheater was a fantastic old building…… I sure
miss it….

Thanks for responding- so many thoughts- Joanie Weston was probably a
better heel than face skater- knew all the tricks She would skate against
the men at times- the guys would gang up on her, but she always came out on
top- I might be one of the few that liked Derby and Roller Games- Was Chet
Coppick an acquired taste? Every clip I’ve seen of him, he seems to be
acting like he’s curing cancer- Only saw Chicago International Amphitheater
in photos- looked like a great old-time building…

glaxona says:

I watched Joanie every Saturday they were rolling back in the 60s…LOVED
her!

thanks for posting this clip of joan weston, if you have a clip on the
bombers and NE braves 7-4-70 women play.

OaktownABQ says:

Awesome! In the 1960s and ’70s, Joan Weston was one of the most recognized
athletes in the SF-Oakland Bay Area. Thanks for posting!

Verbal Volley says:

Does anyone have ANY existing footage of Joanie as a T-Bird. I would
absolutely LOVE to see any of the precious footage that exists. This was
near the demise of the entire sport. I remember Joanie leaving the T-Birds
because she could not swallow the overt camp of Roller Games ( I think it
was called the International Skating Conference at that time).

TheAngel42665 says:

She was best,of the best!!! Her achievements prove it. We need derby back
on tv now!!!!! ps. WILL SOMBODY PLEZ DOWN LOAD the bomer movie from the 70’s

packerbackercat7 says:

After Seltzer made beaucoup bucks on an interleague match game in Comiskey
Park, he sold the league to Griffiths, who shut both of them down to make
the International Skating Conference so he wouldnt have to pay royalties to
Seltzer & his original Roller Games backers. This match is after that. In
Seltzer’s IRDL, all skaters wore helmets to discern who were blockers,
jammers & the pivot men, who could also double as jammers. In Roller Games,
only the jammer wore a helmet & could score.

Girlsportfights says:

tonette did skate a few games for the chiefs team in 73 or 74 with Candi
Mitchell as captian

tnmuslman says:

What a great athlete she was. Awesome clip, thanks for sharing.

MrPete60441 says:

I am willing to bet this was after derby folded and all there was left was
roller games . If memory serves me correctly at this point after derby
folded Weston was skating for the T BIRDS…
